DVD-ROM enabled households for DVD Movies in US to exceed 50.0 million by 2005
InterActual®
Technologies, Inc. announced today that the number of unique online users of
its industry standard software for web-connected DVDs, InterActual Player and
InterActual PCFriendly™, exceeded 7.4 million PC installations through the end
of December 2001, a 274% annual increase over the 2.7 million user base at the
end of December 2000.
In conjunction with
the DVD Entertainment Group and the entertainment research company CENTRIS, InterActual
also announced that the number of consumer households in the United States with
DVD-ROM-enabled computers exceeded 16.0 million at the end of December 2001,
and that over 8.0 million of these households also owned a consumer electronic
or gaming console DVD-Video player.
“These 8.0 million homes with multiple types of DVD
platforms are active enthusiasts of DVD movies on PC’s, and encompass the sweet
spot of convergent digital entertainment that is served by InterActual’s unique
software solutions,” said Todd Collart, CEO of InterActual. “Our software and
associated services enhance multiple-platform DVD movie viewing in these targeted
households and enable compelling entertainment and marketing benefits for both
content owners and consumers,” said Collart.
These enhanced DVD homes have consistently higher appetites for
consumption of multimedia digital entertainment, including larger DVD movie
libraries and higher broadband access and web usage, than homes without DVD-ROM
computers.
“We are excited to explore with InterActual the
opportunities for content developers, retailers, and consumers made available
by promoting enhanced DVD features to this growing multiple-platform DVD
segment,” said Amy Jo Donner, Executive Director of the DVD Entertainment
Group.
“Advances in technology and performance allow
DVD-ROM enabled PC’s to serve as versatile, feature-rich and reasonably priced
digital entertainment platforms, and these capabilities will only accelerate
and improve in future years,” said Collart.
InterActual estimates that the total number of DVD-ROM enabled
households in the United States will exceed 50.0 million by the end of 2005,
and that the number of these households that will be multiple-platform enhanced
DVD homes will be in excess of 36.0 million, a compounded annual growth rate of
nearly 60%.
